Last weekend ‘Afrita’ (33ft Sigma yacht owned & skippered by A & C Laming) entered the 2014 Trinity Race and I was lucky enough to be invited to join the crew. Included in this article are a few of the photographs I shot during the race. The images on this page have been tagged “Portrait”, “People”, “Scapes” & “Sailing”.
The Trinity Race is an annual event in which competitors must sail the 190 nautical mile course from Falmouth around Eddystone Lighthouse, then back along the English Channel, around Wolf Rock Lighthouse and back to Falmouth.
The Trinity is named as such due to the three lighthouses included in the course:
We set off on Satuday at around noon, hoping to return to the finishing-line in Falmouth within 24 hours, however, mother nature had other plans; at around 9pm on Saturday night the wind completely died and left us bobbing around in the middle of the English Channel making virtually no progress for about 6 or 7 hours. Fortunately the same weather affected everybody else involved in the race. The race became more about who was prepared to sit it out and wait for the conditions to improve rather than who had the fastest boat and were the most skilful sailors. A large number of the competitors gave up and motored back to shore. ‘Afrita’ and her crew stuck with it and at around 4 o’clock on Sunday morning a breeze started to push us towards our next mark – Wolf Rock Lighthouse. Fifteen hours later and we were sailing through the finishing-line at The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in Falmouth. We achieved a 2nd place in our class.
Whilst photographing the events aboard ‘Afrita’ last weekend it occurred to me that perhaps there is a market for professional photography aboard privately owned boats. The scenery, the wildlife, the crew and the boat itself all make for great subject matter. I didn’t take many photographs during the Trinity Race (on this occasion I was a crew member and so I was kept busy sailing the boat) however I am happy with the few photos I did get a chance to shoot. If you’d like to hire me to photograph your boat and crew in action get in touch.
